Eating in Lauterbrunnen — what to expect
Lauterbrunnen is a small mountain village famous for its 72 waterfalls, BASE jumpers, and the train to Jungfraujoch. Food is not what people come here for — but it should be. The valley has several genuinely excellent places to eat, and one that is entirely unique in Switzerland.
This is not a round-up of every restaurant with a Google listing. It's the places we know and personally recommend — a mix of street food, cafés, family spots, and proper sit-down dinners. Six places. All worth your time.
A few things before you dive in:
- Switzerland is expensive. Budget CHF 12–16 for street food, CHF 22–40 for a sit-down meal.
- Most places operate May to October. Hours matter — check before you walk over.
- Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Cash in CHF as backup.
- The village is packed July–August. For street food, before 13:00 or after 15:00 is the move.
The one thing you cannot skip
If you eat one thing in Lauterbrunnen, it should be this. Not because we're biased — but because there is genuinely nothing else like it in Switzerland, and 400+ Google reviewers who chose to write about it without being asked say more than we could.
Betty's Corn Dogs
A small blue trailer parked near the Staubbach Falls. Betty makes Korean-style corn dogs using Swiss raclette, Gruyère AOP and locally smoked pork sausage — made from scratch every morning. Three coatings: classic panko, chunky potato fries, or Flamin' Hot Cheetos. Nine rotating sauces. The cheese pull is real.
This is not generic fair food. People travel from Zurich, Germany, and as far as 6,700 km to eat here. Korean mothers have tried the in-house kimchi and called it excellent. One local Swiss reviewer called it the best thing they had ever eaten in their life.
"I live in Switzerland and this is the best thing I have ever eaten in my life. It's been one week and I'm still dreaming about it." — Sarah, Local Guide Switzerland
Five vegetarian options available. Zapiekanka variants are halal-friendly. Open most days — closed Fridays.
Best for families with kids
River Lounge — Sportanlage Eyelti
The most underrated spot in the valley — and the best answer to the question "where do I take the kids?" The Sportanlage Eyelti is the local sports complex: mini-golf, trampolines, RC-cars, bobby cars, table football. Attached to it is the River Lounge bistro, where you can eat and drink while the kids run themselves into the ground.
The setting is open, relaxed and genuinely fun — nothing like the tourist-facing restaurants on the main street. You eat with a view of the valley, not a menu board. The food is honest and straightforward: the kind of place locals actually go. Worth every minute.
Address: Eyelti 201F, 3822 Lauterbrunnen
Breakfast, coffee & lunch
Airtime Café
A European-style café right in the centre of the village. One of the most consistently well-reviewed spots in Lauterbrunnen (4.6★ / 400+ TripAdvisor reviews). Good coffee, sandwiches, soups, pastries. Vegetarian and vegan options. Free Wi-Fi and comfortable seating — good for a morning stop or a sit-down lunch.
Note: only open Friday through Sunday. If you're in the valley midweek, check opening days before making the walk.
Flavours Café
A small, cosy café on the main road. Locally loved for the best carrot cake in the village and delicious homemade Italian-style gelato. Breakfast menu covers scrambled eggs, pancakes, fresh pastries and homemade specials, plus good coffee and fresh juices. The kind of place you go back to multiple times during a stay.
Walk-in customers welcome. Prices are reasonable by local standards — one of the better-value options on the main strip.
Address: Auf der Fuhren 452C, Lauterbrunnen
Sit-down dinner — done properly
Restaurant Weidstübli
The best sit-down restaurant in the Lauterbrunnen valley, full stop. Located inside Camping Jungfrau — don't let that put you off, the setting is a pleasant surprise. Swiss cuisine prepared with real care: rotisserie chicken, pizza, and in autumn a rotating game menu with venison that people specifically return for. Cordon bleu consistently praised.
Considered one of the more affordable proper dinner options in the area by Swiss standards. Warm staff, generous portions, and a lively atmosphere on summer evenings. Reservations are essential — this place fills up. Website: weidstuebli.swiss
Hotel Silberhorn Restaurant & Pizzeria
A proper restaurant inside Hotel Silberhorn, with a cosy fireplace and a winter garden with mountain views. The menu balances traditional Swiss specialties — daily changing 4-course menu available — with stone-baked pizzas and fondue. One of the few places in the valley that actively caters to vegetarian and gluten-free diets throughout the menu.
A reliable choice for a proper dinner without the wait-time pressure of Weidstübli. Good for groups and for anyone who wants a full evening meal in a comfortable setting. Website: silberhorn.com
